The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has received financial approval to purchase a 'telecom monitoring system' to avoid future tensions between operators and the government over revenue sharing. The Cabinet Committee on Public Procurement has agreed to allocate necessary funds to BTRC to bring transparency in revenue collection from telecom operators. In addition, under the 'Establishment of Sheikh Russell Digital Lab (Phase II)' project of the Department of Information and Communication Technology, approval has been given to purchase goods worth Tk 101.28 crore for labs in 5,000 educational institutions. For this project 5 thousand instructor tables, 5 thousand instructor chairs, 80 thousand computer tables and 160,000 computer chairs will be procured, supplied and installed. Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal made the remarks at a virtual press conference after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs and Public Procurement on Wednesday. The finance minister said the BTRC's monitoring system was being procured after a tender was called for setting up a digital regulatory monitoring system. Shamsul Arefin, Additional Secretary to the Cabinet, told a news conference that the system would cost Tk 77,65,32,796 for procurement, development, supply, installation, testing and commissioning. He said the system will be provided by TKC Telecom of Canada.
